About Pony Boy All-Star Band:

This Is… an amalgam of heritage projects, past players and big band lineage, followed to this present point in time. A current snapshot of new arrangements - informed by the music that has come before this time, and in tribute to the great players and music that have inspired us and brought us to “Now.” Both old and new; modern based in tradition.

The new recording features fresh arrangements by members of the band: Greg Williamson, Conner Eisenmenger, Matso Limtiaco, and Keith Karns; and soloists like Jay Thomas, Steve Treseler, Tracy Knoop, Travis Ranney, David Marriott, Brian Shaw, Mike Mines, Chris Fagan, Kandin Neri, Greg Schroeder, Heather Chriscaden and John Hansen. Recorded over three consecutive monthly Fridays, the last being facilitated by Reed Ruddy and his stable of vintage microphones.

Greg Williamson’s association with this heritage music began with the bands of 1980’s Glenn Miller, Woody Herman, Harry James… and the All-Star band continued with Steve Allen, Don Rickles, Bob Newhart… even big band behind Bobby Caldwell and Steve Miller…  and special archeological projects like NW’s Ronnie Pierce 1946 Dream Band, and Claude Thornhill’s “Real Birth of the Cool”…

The bands have included favorites like Bill Ramsay, Randy Lintott, Ted Bowden… and players Larry Fuller… Tula’s Jazz Club was home of NW big bands led by Jay Thomas with many more players… Early inspiration of Ernestine Anderson with big band at summer jazz festivals… Jim Wilke shared so much great Jazz… 10 years of Pony Boy Records Jazz Picnic, musicians and fans… Conversations and Deconstructions concert and CD of recorded interviews and music… Stravinsky Live at San Juan County Fair… Up to our current monthly run - of two years - at JazzClubsNW Boxley’s, with homage programs to Count Basie, Thad Jones/Mel Lewis, Bob Brookmeyer, Francy Bolland/Kenny Clark, Bob Hammer/Charles Mingus, Clayton/Hamilton… up to modern interpretations of music by Mordy Ferber… and now a fresh new collection of arrangers and players.

We - the collective ‘we’ - have been studying the big picture and the small details, and sharing it forward with students and fans…

This is today’s big band - musicians, audiences, and new music notes - still in progress, challenged by new arrangements… a capture of today’s slice of music.
