They started with a wish to put a whole lot of good stuff into one package: Hip jazz harmonies, deep grooves, sultry vocals, searching poetry, joyful improv, some of the old, some of the new, and a lot of soul. It’s a recipe that’s served them well!
When Seattle jazz guitarist and songwriter Glen VanDerPloeg recruited the buttery-voiced alto Heidi Matthews in 2015, it didn’t take long for the duo to form their own distinctive, smokey sound. Seeing they needed only a groovy rhythm section to round it out, they joined forces with upright bassist Will Stump & percussion man Wayne Porter. Since Wayne's departure, percussion has been taken over by Mark Drake.
Sing Low Indigo has played jazz clubs, wine bars, and breweries around the Seattle area, presenting a mix of smoky ballads (Billie Holiday), reimagined jazz standards (Cole Porter), funked-up vintage pop tunes (Bill Withers), and memorable originals with thoughtful lyrics and a mix of styles. You can hear many of their original tunes on two studio releases, 2017 and 2022. On these releases you can hear the core quartet (vocal, guitar, bass, percussion) that is joined in the studio by talented friends on keys, violin, and congas. Though they may look like a jazz quartet, their sound travels to many strange, funky, and unexpected places – because the journey is so much fun!
